DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN KINETICS AND HEALTH EDUCATION
Brief History of the Department
In June 1961, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) advertised for application from interested candidates to pursue B.Sc degree in Physical Education, being first of its kind in Africa South of Sahara and west of Limpopo. In September 1961, fifteen candidates were admitted for the three-year and four-year degree programmes as pioneer students of the Department. Students in the three-year programme graduated in 1964, while others in the four-year programme graduated in 1965. All were employed in the various school systems in Nigeria, while one was retained by the department as a promising academic.
By 1972, the Department reviewed its programme to include several courses in Health Education. Consequently, the Department changed its name to Health and Physical Education. During the 1987/88 academic year, the Department introduced the sandwich degree programme. The two-year regular degree programme of the Department for NCE holders was offered as four-year B.Sc sandwich programme. Since then, the Sandwich degree programme of the Department has been a success story as has been. The regular programme, following the NUC accreditation of the programmes, the two-year degree programme was discontinued.
During the 1991/92 session, the Department of HPE UNN started to offer two separate degree options as a result of the first NUC accreditation exercise and recommendations. This gave rise to offering degree programmes as follows:
- B.Sc degree programme in Health Education
- B.Sc degree programme in Physical Education and Recreation
The academic programmes of the department are revised periodically as deemed fit by the University senate to meet the grousing demands of the ever developing academic sphere.
Philosophy of Human Kinetics and Sports Studies (HKS)
The philosophy of the programme of Human Kinetics and Sports Studies is derived from the Nigerian philosophy of education which advocates for self-reliance, democratic living and national unity. Therefore, as an academic discipline, the programme is designed to prepare professionally qualified persons who can teach, organize, administer as well as lead the programme of physical activities and sports in Educational Institutions, Sports Clubs, Recreation and Fitness Establishments, Rehabilitation Centres and the Community.
As the Nigeria National Policy of Education provides that the teaching of Physical Education be emphasized at all levels of education; and as the country makes huge financial investments committed to sports development, it is absolutely necessary to train and produced qualified practitioners in this area so that within-school and out-of-school, the practice and management of Human Kinetics and Sports programmes can be advanced from sound theoretical and scientific perspectives thereby contributing to the attainment of nation’s aspirations.
Philosophy of Health Education (HED)
The philosophy of the programme is derived from the Nigerian philosophy of education, which advocates education for self reliance, democratic living and national unity. Health runs on a continuum ranging from wellness to illness and death. The human history is that of continuous effort to strike a balance along this continuum with the aim of postponing the ultimate end – death. Health education and promotion come to the rescue in this constant struggle to strike a balance. This is achieved through carefully planned and executed body of learning aimed at increasing both the wellness promotion, knowledge; illness prevention and self efficacy. Health education and promotion, in a nutshell, are meant to popularize the art of illness and health conditions primary and secondary prevention.
